What Is Alkaline Water?

The lesser the number, the more acidic the substance is and vice versa. For instance, if a substance has a pH level of 1, it’s supposed to be highly acidic. If a substance shows 13, it’s highly alkaline.
The pH level in your regular water is a neutral 7, which is why it’s perfect for hydration. Alkaline water generally has a pH level of 8 or 9. But it’s not enough to simply have a higher pH level.
The water should also have alkaline minerals, while its ORP should be negative. ORP stands for oxidation-reduction potential. This measures how much your water acts as a pro-oxidant or antioxidant. The more your ORP that’s in the negative, the more antioxidants will be in the water.

What Are the Benefits of Alkaline Water?
Now, it needs to be said right away… For most people, regular water is what works the best. Although multiple studies have shown that alkaline water can be helpful with a few conditions.
In one study conducted in 2012, results showed drinking this water, with an 8.8 pH value and naturally carbonated, can deactivate an enzyme called pepsin. This enzyme is primarily responsible for acid reflux in people.
A separate study showed that alkaline water is beneficial for those suffering from certain conditions. This is especially true for people with high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol. It also seems to help with the viscosity of your blood. Viscosity is the measurement of how thick your blood is.
In a recent study, the viscosity levels were reduced by 6.3% for those who drank high pH alkaline water, compared to just over 3% for people who drank regular water. This means the blood flow was more efficient, and oxygen was delivered easier.
Alkaline water has been shown to help with your bone health, especially with bone resorption. This is where your body breaks down your old bone cells and replaces them with new cells.
The lesser the bone resorption with a greater mineral density, the stronger your bones will be. A study showed consumption of alkaline water can bring down bone resorption more than mineral water rich in calcium and acids.
Natural or Artificial?
If you’re looking for naturally occurring alkaline water, you’d have to look for water that passes over rocks and picks up minerals along the way. These minerals cause your alkaline level to go up. Water from a spring is usually one of the places you find naturally occurring water with high pH levels.
But the alkaline water you get at the store usually goes through a process called electrolysis. This chemical process uses an ionizer to increase the pH level of regular water. The ionizer is supposed to separate water molecules that are more acidic. The acidic water is then funneled out.
It is, of course, important that the original source of water is free of contaminants. If the water you use in electrolysis is contaminated, it doesn’t matter how much you increase the pH level.
It’s suggested that the water is purified using reverse osmosis. That way, any contaminants that may be in the water are removed. The alkaline ionizer can then be used to increase the pH level and add minerals.
But there’s something else you need to consider before purifying water. Things like reverse osmosis and distillation. Research has proven it’s unhealthy to drink water with low minerals.

Possible Side Effects
Before you commit to it, there are a few things you need to know. Alkaline water in itself is safe to consume. But there are dangers to drinking too much.
For instance, it could reduce the amount of natural acidity in your stomach. This acidity is necessary for the overall health of your body. Because it kills the bacteria. This stomach acid also helps ensure no pathogens get into your bloodstream. Killing off that acidity can be harmful in the long run.
Too much alkaline in your body may end up giving you gastrointestinal issues. It will also give you skin-related issues.
A dramatic increase in alkaline agitates your body’s normal pH level, which results in something called metabolic alkalosis. This particular condition comes with symptoms like nausea, hand tremors, muscle twitching, and even confusion.
Alkalosis has additional side effects such as reducing the calcium levels in your body. Because there’s less free calcium in your body, it ends up affecting your bone health.

You can get alkaline water at your local supermarket. Health food stores also stock this water and you can purchase it online. If you want to do the electrolysis yourself, you can purchase your own ionizer from the store.
You can try putting more alkaline in your water using stuff in your kitchen. While lemon is naturally acidic, it has minerals that produce alkaline. So all you have to do is squeeze a bit of lemon or lime into your water to make it more alkaline. This happens when your body is done digesting it.
Instead of lime, you can try adding baking soda as well. There are also some pH drops available that you can add to your water. This will for sure make it more alkaline.
Is it safe?
Safety has never been a real concern when it comes to alkaline water. As long as you can make sure the water source you’re using is clean, you should be good. You also need to ionize and re-mineralize it to make your alkaline water. While there are side effects, there is no need to dramatically reduce the amount of this you drink.
The lack of minerals is the only real concern with alkaline water. You also need to make sure you’re not killing off the acidic levels in your stomach. If you keep those things in mind, it will be a healthy choice.
